Information needed about the Hill House Collection

A few weeks back, Karen Neal in Hill House contacted Carmichael Library about a rediscovered collection that had suffered water damage. The collection contains biographical information on noted Alabamians and consists mostly of newspaper clippings. The bulk of the articles are from the 1950s and 1960s.

With the help of Dallas Hanbury, archives student worker, and Jamie Rawls, archives intern, we were able to save this collection. After allowing the paper to fully dry, Dallas and Jamie organized the articles and rehoused them in archive appropriate containers. The material has been named the Hill House Collection.

Alabama Author's Book Optioned by Film Company

Bob Carlton, of the Birmingham News, reports that Warren St. John's Rammer Jammer Yellow Hammer has been picked up by Half Shell Entertainment. Published in 2004, the book traces the steps of devoted University of Alabama football fans as they travel from game to game during the 1999 season.

In 2006, RJYH earned St. John the Alabama Library Association's Author Award for Nonfiction.

Inman Majors at Carmichael Library

I was thrilled to be in the audience this past Friday afternoon to hear Inman Majors read from his hilarious novel Wonderdog (2004). Majors was in the library to deliver the Fiction Keynote Reading for this year's Montevallo Literary Festival. Congratulations to our own Alan May and the many other individuals who made this year's festival a success!

Dr. Cornel West to speak at ASU

Next week brings the opportunity to see one of the nation's preeminent scholars right here in Alabama. Dr. Cornel West will speak on the campus of Alabama State University this coming Monday. From the ASU website:

The National Center for the Study of Civil Rights and African-American Culture at Alabama State University will host the Ralph D. Abernathy Civil Rights Lecture Series on Monday, December 3 at 7 p.m. at the Joe L. Reed Acadome. Dr. Cornel West will be the guest speaker. His topic will be “Democracy and African Americans in the 21st Century” The public is invited to attend.

Jean Valentine Reading, Feb. 22!

National Book Award Winner Jean Valentine will be reading in Carmichael Library at 3:30 on Thursday, Feb. 22.
