ILLiad to Be Unavailable Monday, December 1st

Next week will bring some temporary down time for our interlibrary loan service as we perform a system upgrade. ILLiad will be unavailable for requests between the hours of 12:00-2:00 p.m. on Monday, December 1st.

Prior to 12:00 p.m. on Monday we will temporarily disable our interlibrary loan web pages at http://libguides.montevallo.edu/illiad. Over the next several hours we will still accept requests for articles and books; for help submitting a request during this time, please use our Ask a Librarian web pages. Remember that any electronic requests submitted during the maintenance window will not be saved in our system. We will post to social media on Monday once the system upgrade is complete.

Thanks for your patience as we perform this update to our systems!

eRes to Be Unavailable Tuesday, August 18th

We will be applying server and software upgrades to our electronic reserves system tomorrow, August 18th. While eRes will remain visible online throughout the upgrade, faculty and staff are advised not to upload new documents or make other changes to course reserves pages tomorrow as these modifications will be lost in the transfer to a new server.

This maintenance will begin at approximately 9:00 AM and we'll post here when the work has been completed.

Thanks for your patience as we upgrade eRes!

University Web Site Access Restored

Just a quick note to let everyone know that the earlier problems with the UM web site appear to resolved. We lost access to the university web site shortly before 11:00 AM. The site was again working as of approximately 11:15. Thankfully, this outage did not affect the library catalog or access to full text journals, but it's never a bad idea to have these links bookmarked should we experience further problems.

As always, you can check our blog for any news we receive from Computer Services about planned down times.

This is just a quick dispatch from the Ask Here Desk to let everyone know that there will be no access to the public computers surrounding the Desk for just a few minutes. Computer Services staff are now working to upgrade some hardware. This work should be completed shortly and does not impact any other computers in the Library building.

Thanks for your patience as we upgrade our systems!

Catalog, Databases Unavailable Tuesday AM, May 15

We've got a planned outage to report but this one will only effect you early birds. :)

Most of the university's servers will be taken down tomorrow morning starting around 6:00 AM. While the UM website and campus e-mail will remain available, this down time is expected to include the library's servers for the catalog, the eRes system, and remote authentication into the databases. Computer Services expects that this outage will last an hour or two. At this point we can expect library services to be restored by opening time tomorrow at 8:00 AM.

We'll post here again tomorrow should this timetable change.

New Card Readers Available in the Library

We've upgraded our card readers for the photocopiers and they are now ready for you to use. Our new readers also have an added advantage: you can also use them to add value to your card!

The display on the new readers gives you a running tally of how many copies you can purchase with your remaining funds. When your credit runs out, of course, you can always add value to the card you already have using our new readers. Additionally, the original card machine is still available on the main floor.

New Feature in Central Search

Central Search now has a new feature called search clustering. After you've performed your search, look to the upper left of the screen to see the "Clustered Results" for the term(s) you've entered. This feature groups articles with like terms together to help you further narrow your search. You can also cluster by date, by journal title, and by author.

(Central Search is a tool you can use to search multiple databases at the same time. To find Central Search, click here or look for Central Search under the Find Articles section of our home page. Please note: not all of our databases are included in Central Search.)

Want Another Way to Watch This Blog? Widge It!

Did you know that you can use a desktop widget to keep track of our blog? In addition to the live feed on our toolbar, there are other options if you're interested in keeping up with the latest news from your campus library.

Yahoo! Widgets has a nifty RSS Feed Reader that you can place on your desktop and get our latest headlines. Here's how to get it up and running:

Step One: Download the Yahoo! Widget Engine at http://widgets.yahoo.com

Step Two: Following the on-screen instructions, install the engine to your computer. The last screen gives you the option of launching the engine. Keep the launch engine option checked to get started.

Step Three: Download the RSS Feed Reader Widget at the following address: http://widgets.yahoo.com/gallery/dl_r.php?widget=40820. Choose the Save (or Save to Disk option for Mozilla users) and place the file in your Yahoo! Widgets directory. (The Widget Engine installer places this directory just off of your My Documents folder.)

Step Four: Open the RSS Feed Viewer Widget directly from your My Documents/My Widgets folder. The file name is RSS_Feed_Viewer. When prompted, choose the Use Widget Button.

Step Five: After the widget opens, right click on it and choose the Widget Preferences... option.

Step Six: Edit the entry in the top field, Selected Feed, to reflect the feed address for our blog: http://carmichaellibrary.blogspot.com/rss.xml.

If you've entered the above address correctly, you should see our blog headlines on your desktop!

There's a few steps involved here, so feel free to send me an e-mail if you have questions about how to set up desktop widgets. We can also help you set up our feed in your web-based feed reader. My favorites are Bloglines and My Yahoo!
