Black History Month Page Focuses on Alabama

As Black History Month draws to a close don't miss this web site: Birmingham television station NBC 13 has put together an excellent Black History Month page. Here's a sample of what you'll find there:

• Video of Charles Barkley speaking at the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Unity Breakfast
  
• An article and video clip about minorities in academia in the state of Alabama
  
• A short piece by anchorman Mike Royer about the three black Alabama men who have received the Medal of Honor

New Card Readers Available in the Library

We've upgraded our card readers for the photocopiers and they are now ready for you to use. Our new readers also have an added advantage: you can also use them to add value to your card!



The display on the new readers gives you a running tally of how many copies you can purchase with your remaining funds. When your credit runs out, of course, you can always add value to the card you already have using our new readers. Additionally, the original card machine is still available on the main floor.

Reminder: Jean Valentine Reading this Thursday

Just a reminder that National Book Award Winner Jean Valentine will be reading in Carmichael Library at 3:30 this Thursday, Feb. 22. Light refreshments will be served following the presentation. We hope to see you here!

More Black History Month Video Online

If you're on the UM campus be sure to check out this speech by Autherine Lucy Foster. Foster was on the UM campus in 2000 to talk about her experiences as the first African-American Woman to attend the University of Alabama. This encore presentation is provided by the Division of Mass Communication's MCC News. Due to bandwidth limitations this link will not work from off-campus locations.

Also, don't miss a one hour interview from the Birmingham Public Library with two stars of baseball's Negro League era. Birmingham Black Barons players Jesse Mitchell and James Sanders discuss playing baseball in Birmingham and the history of the team. Clayton Sherrod from the Alabama Negro League Association is the interviewer. You can download the full interview at the link above. The discussion appeared earlier this month on a Birmingham public access channel. Not only is this interview appropriate for Black History Month but it coincides perfectly with baseball season here in Montevallo, which officially began on the 3^rd of February.

New Feature in Central Search

Central Search now has a new feature called search clustering. After you've performed your search, look to the upper left of the screen to see the "Clustered Results" for the term(s) you've entered. This feature groups articles with like terms together to help you further narrow your search. You can also cluster by date, by journal title, and by author.
